  1. L. M. Elliott's descriptions of Henry's captors and his journey through the French "Underground Railroad" make this novel real. I don't usually care about reading war stories, but I have found this one interesting. I think early on when Henry talked about Patsy made me think of my parents, so I wanted to know what happened to Henry.

At first, I wasn't sure if I trusted the people Henry met in the hospital. I don't know if I could have been so trusting. Knowing what I know about history and how soldiers can be tortured if captured, Henry had to be very trusting...and brave. His journey compares to Odysseus's in a way, but Henry's journey was real.

I can understand why so many of the French who helped him were gruff with him. The SS had a reputation of no mercy. As Chen states in his article, "German forces employed a policy to rule by iron fist, including later retribution operations against innocent civilians. The SS also tortured many suspected resistance group members, with them ending up either dead or in a concentration camp."

Elliott's constantly putting Henry on the move and the seemingly unwilling help he received demonstrates the fear the French lived in during the time of German occupation.

I think that L. M. Elliot was very accurate in the events that she included in the story. She was able to accurately portray events that could have actually happened during that time period. She showed the acts of violence from normal people turned angry from the war. She showed the brutality of the Gestapo, what it would have been like as a maquis fighter, and even the hardship of one of the downed allied flyer in the war and the challenges they had to go through as they attempted to survive, let alone escape.

  4. The book Under a War-Torn sky by L.M. Elliott, portrays the events that occurred With the French Resistance in a very realistic way. Henry struggling to find his way back to his home in the United States portraits a perfect example of the French Resistance. There is a group of people who all correspond together to work against the Nazi forces and get Henry home. They all correspond together to help soldiers get back to where ever they came from. The Resistance can be a cruel thing as well though, because if someone gets caught, they have to keep their mouth shut unless they want everyone to go down with them.

  5. L.M. Elliott did a quite amazing job portraying the events that happened in World War II. She used real events and real examples throughout the selected sections of “Under A War-Torn Sky.” For example, when Henry and Claudette go into camp, Claudette talked to a maquis member. Also when they went into town, L.M. Elliott used something that probably would’ve happened to a person who was suspected of associating with the Nazis. “Accused of collaboration with the Nazis, her hair had been shaved off, her dress torn open. Bald, half-naked, vulnerable, she quaked before the people who spat at her and called her vulgar names. A pregnant woman held a long horsewhip and stood before the girl.” Therefore, L.M. Elliott did a beautiful job of portraying events that happened in World War II.

I feel that L.M. Elliott reflects events that occurred during World War II, specifically with the French resistance, with relative excellence. She referenced real resistance groups, and real events that occurred during the time period. One being the destruction of entire towns in an effort to intimidate the Marquis. This is a few of the ways that she is realistic in her description of the French Resistance.

    L. M. Elliot portrays the events that occurred with the French Resistance in a realistic way because soldiers in the army and resistance miss their families and are scared to fight. Henry talks about how he might think his family thinks he is dead and how much he misses Pasty. He also realized that everything his father had did to him was out of love not hate or kindness. Also talks about real groups and real events that did happen in this time period and also made some events of her own that could have happened like when the French man ratted Henry out and caused him to get caught.

  11. L.M. Elliot effectively portrays the events that occurred with the French resistance by using a real French resistance group, which was the Maquis. Also L.M. Elliot used events such as the Germans spreading throughout France; and the Gestapo killing and torturing suspected French resistance group members.

  12. In my point of view L.M Elliot reflect Under the war torn to WWII from the french resistance and the Vichy government. He possess how the french resistance stealthy finds ways to travel to there designated area with out be spotted by Nazi Germans. This concludes the French resistance warfare opposing to the Nazi soldiers to fight for what is right for France country.

After reading “Under a War Torn Sky” by L. M. Elliott, he portrays the events that occurred in the book with the “French Resistance” as, both realistic. In “Under a War Torn Sky,” L. M. Elliott uses realistic events in the book like, World War II, air forces, bombing, personal feelings, etc. In the “French Resistance,” he uses realistic events like capturing certain people who weren’t doing right or who were enemies, and in “Under a War Torn Sky,” Henry gets captured by enemies and is put in a cell type area. In both the book and the “French Resistance,” there are enemies called Maquis, so they are both similar by that.

  14. I think that L. M. Elliot had did a great job portraying events that happened with French Resistance. By telling the events to character showing that book progresses like how World War II progressed. Here an example of one the mother of Pierre was French fighter who resisted the Vichy government and was hiding from the Gestapos. The mother also had weapons, which in the book that said that came here from drops of the British. The routes that Henry took to get from place to place is to be noted that during those times they were looking for French Resisters since most of Europe was German-occupied. -Kevin Richardson

L.M. Elliot portrays the events that occurred with the “French Resistance” because some of the even that happen in the book the same thing happen on the article about the French Resistance. She used a lot of terms that was in the book. She both consider the French Resistance group which is “Maquis”. She tells how in the book all the explosive happened and in the article they explain the explosive going on. But some the some that was in the “French Resistance” paragraph we haven’t read the far in the book “Under A War-Torn Sky”. To me it seem like “Under A War-Torn Sky” happened or is “The French Resistance”.

L.M. Elliott did a great job of portraying the events in World War II because this stuff did happen in real life quite often even though it might not have been these people or the exact way she wrote about. She thoroughly fit the information needed and more into the story and did it very well. A reason why she did a great job is because she mentioned real groups of people and real places that it all happened in. She was very specific and realistic when she told about the towns and places they had been in order to keep away from the enemy and even when they were on the train and his time spent with Madame and the Pierre’s family.

I think that Under A Worn-Torn Sky relates to the French Resistance because of the actions that took place. Henry had to go through a lot to survive. Henry had people that helped him to get back to his base so the U.S. could help the French against the Nazi’s. The French that were helping Henry had to kept their mouth shut so that if suspected of anything, they wouldn’t have to go to concentration camps and tortured and maybe killed. The French relied on Henry to survive because they knew without Henry, they couldn’t make a change.

L.M Elliott’s real event like the French underground rail road brings interesting ideas to the story. Henrys struggles to get back home for his family and friends showing how much he chairs about them shows how human and realistic L.M Elliott made henrys character. The fact that we see characters that go out of their way to help henry while he gets close to that then those characters are probably dead like madam, Pierre, and the teacher is a realistic story telling because of that is how things happened if you tried to help someone during that time

L.M. Elliot portrays the events that occurred with the french resistance really well. The author uses realistic events to explain the french resistance. She explains how the french resistance would give up there life to defeat the Germans. She also showed how cruel the Gestapo was by explaining how they tortured Henry just as how they would a soldier. The author also shows how the French resistance were determined to get Henry home safely.

In my opinion L.M Elliott portrays the events of French Resistance very well. She has used events that actual happened and put them in the story to portray what really happened in the French Resistance. I think she choose very good examples and put them into the story in her own why but also relating to the French Resistance. One really effectively why is when Henry and Billy got reunited at a marquis. In the French Resistance they had very many marquis violent groups. Just like what Henry and Billy went to. She also showed through Henry meeting up with the little boy and his mother that if the Germany soldiers suspected anyone they would take them in for interrogation like they did the boy’s mother.

L.M Elliot effectively portrays these events very well through the story "Under a War-Torn Sky". She uses realistic events in the story to connect the situation of the World War II. Other people have to sacrifice themselves in order to get Henry back to his homeland. This chain of events last throughout a couple of chapters.

Although the characters in the novel aren’t real, the events and people mentioned in the story were very accurate. I think L.M. Elliott did an excellent job of effectively portraying realistic events in the novel “Under a War Torn Sky”. In the novel she mentioned the French Resistance, Nazis, the marquis, and the Gestapos, which are real people and groups that had a huge influence in World War II. For instance, in the novel Henry’s (the main character) plane is shot down and he and the rest are soldiers are hurt and loss. The French Resistance helps Henry and tries to lead the soldiers to a safe place. Although, the French Resistance is helping the soldiers they are still scared to get caught because if they get caught helping, they could also get hurt and sent to a camp. She also showed how some of the soldiers were treated and how they were brutally beaten by Nazis and Gestapos. In the novel, she often shows the feelings and the emotions of the characters (mostly soldiers) and how they felt about the way they were treated.

In my opinion I think that "Under a War Torn Sky" by L.M Elliot really gives the reader a good idea of what the French resistance was. In the story Henry meets Madame Gallouise and from then on he meets other French people, resulting in him interacting with the Maquis and his old “friend” Billy. The Maquis in the story is described very well in the story to what it actually is because L.M Elliot gives details of how hidden they are and how much they try not to get captured by the Germams.

L.M. Elliott portrayed the events of the French Resistance as accurately as an American soldier could describe them. Henry was being helped and carried around by The French Resistance soldiers. They were not allowed to give him any information about their group or efforts due to the fear of one of their “packages” getting captured. If a soldier like Henry was captured during one of their journeys, they could have told The Gestapo or The Vichy Government of the Allies’ plans. The events of The French Resistance’s events could not have been completely portrayed by Henry due to this reason. L.M. Elliott did describe what occupations some of the members had, however, with great accuracy. The Maquis was known as a violent group, which L.M. Elliot did describe with the way they treated her characters. The French Resistance’s attitude was described accurately with a few accurate facts of their war efforts in Under a War-Torn Sky.

L.M. Elliott portrays the events that occurred with the French Resistance through constant dialogue of the characters, their background, and actions. The characters are presented as very secretive and the resistance had to be in order to fulfill their goals and purpose. Elliott made sure to make the characters as realistic as possible. They all come from different background and they had to make adaptions to Henry’s situation. Madame, a rich woman whose son was also in the army, comes from a rich and lavish background but is willing to put it in danger as she helps Henry to his next destination. This is an example of the author used realistic situations and people and what they back then at the time for the resistance. Another example was back when Henry and Billy met up at maquis camp. Henry did not know the blond kid when asked by one of the group’s leader. Sometime later and the group shot the kid since they unsure of his agenda or if he was a spy sent to them. The real resistance such as the one in the book could not allow such liabilities to compromise them as the Vichy government would not be on their side.

    L. M. Elliott effectively used the French resistance to shape events that happened to Henry. The Maquis to help Henry along his way back to the U.S. The French Resistance help keep Henry from getting killed. They also kept Henry’s mouth shut. She used the French resistance to shape the plot of this story by using realistic events.

    L. M. Elliot effectively portrays the events that occurred with the French Resistance though many descriptive scenes. She descriptively tells how the Resistance operated based on stories of her father and his days of war. I found it interesting that so many different groups were aiding the French resistance and willing to go to such an extent to rid the world of the Nazis.
Elliot shows how, even though everyone had differing opinions, they were willing to ban together to defeat a common enemy. Everyone had to pick a side and many were in favor of the French resistance, whether they were otherwise enemies or not. They would supply weapons and technology, clothing and food, counterfeit coupons and food stamps, and much more. The French Resistance as described in Under A War Torn Sky, exhibited many characteristics that people need today such as being able to put the past behind them, forgive those they had previously come into conflict with, and good priorities, all for the greater good.

L.M Elliot portrays the events that occurred with the French Resistance by giving readers some information about the Maquis throughout the characters helping Henry. She also talks about experiences they had to go through like having to get their weapons by the British who parachute it to them and how sometimes the Germans would ambush them while getting their weapons. But mostly she gives the characters that helped Henry to his journey brave personality's that show how they risked their own life to rebel against the Germans by helping Henry and the Maquis.

L.M. Elliott portrays the events that occurred with French Resistance as a reality. Even though her characters in the book aren’t real all the events are. For example, in the book “Under A War-Torn Sky” she mentions and talks about the Nazis, the airplanes they had, the guns they had, the Allied Powers, and how hard it would be for people to get out of enemy territory if they crash landed. She told the story of soldiers that crashed landed and wanted to get back to the United States. She talked about what most of these soldiers had to go through just to get back. All of these events are true and that is the way she told them. Even the part about love is true. The soldiers had people back home that loved them and wanted them to get back alive. So almost everything in this book is true except for the names of the characters.

  33. L.M. Elliott effectively portrays these two selections in a good way in my opinion. Even though this story is not real, the author uses real life events. I’ve never read a book like that. I think the reason this story seems real even though it isn’t is because the author used real life events and put her own twist on it. I think the way she blended real and not real was really good.

  35. The writer L.M Elliot portrays the events in the story and in the French resistance very good. Her use of names, places, and timing is very accurate. In “Under a War torn sky “the events that takes place could have happen in real life in this time frame. For example in the story Henry asks if it was June and the officer tells him the invasion had begun. He told him that the Allied troops just landed on the beaches of France a week ago. In real life this did happen but its day is not precise.

  40. The author L.M. Elliot helps bring the reader into the events Henry is experiencing by telling the readers how he is feeling. With chapter nineteen and twenty, I could imagine the whole thing like a scene in a movie. The author mentions every detail possible in those two chapters. She puts in chapter twenty that he remembers when his dad told him to put his dog out of its misery when he saw the dog hurt. Henry sleeping with the dog even though it was going to die that night, shows how caring Henry was for the dog. I also think she brought the reader into the Henry’s experience by the dog, because a lot of people have a dog. I feel people could relate to this because most people love their pet and wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to it. That is probably why most people were getting emotional during these two chapters.

I think L.M. Elliot portrays the events that occurred with the French Resistance very well. She uses real life situations with Henry to emphasize the complexity and detail that goes into keeping people safe from the enemy. She explains in detail how he was bounced from person to person, and the care that went into hiding in plain sight, even the most unsuspecting people were in on it, such as a bartender and a dishwasher.

L.M. Elliot was able to link the story with real life event through many ways, one being the French Resistance. Just like Henry was helped by the French, many Americans were also helped by the French. The French Resistance even had woman involved, back then that was truly rare, because in the 1900s’ woman were supposed to stay home watch the kids, cook, and clean, but during the war time, woman took over the men’s jobs in the factories where they made bombs, ammo, tanks, airplanes, and other things that were needed for the war-front. So the woman who helped the resistance would make the young American soldiers seem like they were just normal people and not the people that Germany were fighting.
